Yes, we're living in crazy times. My wife tells me about the raids her father endured in the 1960s and 1970s, so American deportation of Mexicans without papers is not a new thing -- but tooting one's horn about it is. As Jeffrey Sachs and others have noted, the US stopped practicing diplomacy under Biden and it is certainly not returning under Trump. When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

So true - this whole thing is such a panacea to make the masses paying exorbitant prices for eggs feel like something is happening to improve their lives.

Bravo, Sra Sheinbaum! It's going to be a long road for everyone, but especially for leaders of nations who he wants to bully. I think there's only like 1451 more days to go. (Good post, Mike).

Ha - yes, counting the minutes. It feels like there are too many of them left. Thanks, Jeanine.

I'm glad she might have done so, not knowing either way. Still, standing up to a bully can only be to the good in my book. Here's hoping we all live through these crazy years and wishing the best for all of us.

Yes, may we make it through with our lives somewhat unscathed by the rhetoric-driven actions of our chosen kleptocrats.

My biggest fear with Trump is I sighting a war - warm or cold. He lacks any diplomacy and is making enemies out of allies. 🥲

He really is - he and his ilk are the kinds of people who see enemies everywhere. I think there's a term for that...

The title of this blog is top notch!

I appreciate it the stance you took on all of this including the moral conundrum and the point about bullies.

The thing that perhaps most people in America aren't noticing, because they don't live in Mexico or speak Spanish, is rising xenophobia against them specifically, but that is also affecting the migrants like me who could pass as Americans. It's getting scary out there, and I don't even blame the xenophobes for feeling that way.

True - the rising xenophobia against anyone who looks like they're from the U.S. (i.e. white-skinned) is something that worries me too. What a ridiculous circumstance the moronic voters in the U.S. is putting nearly the whole world through.

Get out your economic chips, Sra. Presidenta. No. We are not playing Loteria. What Trump is doing is not on anyone's Loteria Tablas. Sigh. Refuse to play this game? How about the Monopoly game, you say? Put on my Poker face? ... not sure how to land my mixed metaphors at this point ... More sighs. I recently played Checkers with a 12-year-old who declared himself to be a Trumpy. He insisted the 'crowned' Checker Kings chips had two different privileges from the rest of the chips. I played by his rules, frustrated that I could not gently persuade him otherwise. When I declared the game becoming a bore, he let me win!!! More sighs... his condescending salt on my bruised ego. Mike, thanks for inviting me to express myself. January 29, New Moon, is a day for quiet reflection and planting metaphorical seeds. You all got to 6:36 am Central Time tomorrow. What does all this have to do with airplanes, shackles, and a gorilla, you ask? Great question.

Everyone has their chess moves. it's good measure for everyone to take a breath, observe and remember...this is well funded theater. Claudia has made her retaliation, Trudeau has, um, told us that he's gonna keep his orange juice and lousy whisky. I'll bet it's temporary (the tariffs) and if you don't think we need a hard reset on immigration in the US, gosh, Wally. Where you be? it's dramatized and the telly is acting like they're ripping people out of chef stations all over but this isn't about good hard working Mexicans. MS13 face tatted infiltration gangs that have set up entire communities of cartel activity in Houston or on the Reservations? And the Venezuelans thugs who got ousted from NYC and the Chinese and others who are doing things way beyond taco tuesday...it has to be like this. A few dolphins get caught in the net when trawling for tuna. There are some bigger moves coming. And since the cartel has opened drone fire on border patrol? Maybe bigger than I are to think about. But as my Marine Colonel dad would say...Just Watch.

You jumped ahead of me with the tariff thing! How dare you. Anyway, I think it’s more than the MS13 crowd that the administration is going after - but to each his (13) own. I have no love for the face-tatted gangsters (especially since they rejected my application). But I suspect a lot more dolphins are getting caught than your typical fishing expedition, and that they’re being caught for purely performative reasons.

Of course, my record for being wrong about things is nearly flawless. Which means I have nothing to lose no matter what I say!
