Love how you stay on top of current events tied to Mexico! Thank you. Now I’m gonna have to go and see this darn movie. :-) I wish I could bring one of those pink Barbie buns with me to eat while I watch – lol. The good news is that the theaters are air-conditioned, so it doubles as a respite from the heat. And, at least, in my town, it is offered as a double feature with Oppenheimer. I’ll bring my sweater! Woo hoo!

I'm pretty sure the Mexico Listo board of directors would fire me if I didn't stay on top of current events tied to Mexico. So it's all about job preservation. In any event, I hope you enjoy Barbie, Oppenheimer, and the AC!!

The big question is which movie to watch second to wash down the first. Give me popcorn and a hot dog!

It's a conundrum! Let's cheer Christy on as she navigates that difficult question!

I love bougainvillea too, when I am not pruning it!

LOL - yes, they do tend to want to take over, don't they? Maybe we can reason with them to stay in their place, and to try not to be so thorny 🙂

I always found pink to be a pleasing colour for the eyes. Especially with the huge amount of pink in the Barbie movie as well as for all the promotional products. I think the change to pink here is gotta be my favourite. I'm also glad to see the buzz from both men (excluding Ben Shapiro and Andrew Tate wannabes) and women for the movie as well. I haven't watched the movie yet, but if I do, I hope it's worth the hype.

Thanks Fahim - you've convinced me. I'm keeping the pink!

I love my bougainvillea (even if I have to copy / paste the word because I surely can't spell it on my own), but Barbie hasn't called to me, and I sort of think it's not going to. I'd rather go outside and watch the pink leaves fall down. Amazing what gets people excited. For some, a movie; for others a little breeze. Now to eat some more pineapple which has nothing to with pink, I believe, but is still very delicious. Mike, you're the man. Onward.

I definitely welcome the breeze as well - especially this time of year! I think pineapple is a worthy alternative to a sticky theater floor - enjoy it. I myself will by busy with a mango. Thanks for reading and commenting, Victor!

I am back AFTER reading your Barbie story. Yes, like in school, I was trying to enter into the conversation here without having done my homework reading. Mike, you writing is doing more pivots than dancers dancing el Jarabe Tapatío. I am appreciating very much not just the variety of topics but witnessing an emergent writing style. More you? I do wish I knew you more. As always, I learned a lot. I celebrate Greta the Director. The movie-going stats astonish me as much as the number of people that voted for Trump. I wonder how many of them will don pink and polka dots (like me - comparison ends there, by the way) to watch this movie. What human nerve has Barbie touched? Can we get a discussion going here?

No worries, Elva - sometimes I write my stories without ever reading them! Funny you mentioned Jarabe Tapatío - I was watching YouTube videos these dancers just 2 weeks ago. Anyway, let's hope that the Trump voter count is a declining statistic, and that beet juice remains in plentiful supply.

Maybe the human nerve that this hit is a little bit of nostalgia for something that we now see as fraught with gender biases. So seeing an icon like that again, but through the lens of a bit of satire has some appeals and allows us to RE-enjoy it. That’s my guess anyway!

I wish I would just do a Thumbs up or down. Thank you, Christy, for your additional thoughts: a good synopsis (me thinks) of a Medium article I just read that begins to articulate how I feel about the movie. I have been afraid to admit the movie triggered my own (vestigial?) patriarchal genes hiding deeply in my marrow.

This is the link to a (fairly balanced, - me thinking again) critique of the movie:

https://medium.com/cinemania/the-problem-s-with-greta-gerwigs-barbie-72253ca0ae97

and another whose title made me believe I'd be reading the conservative point of view. It is not.

https://medium.com/theuglymonster/barbie-is-a-menace-to-conservatives-c6ebcfe6ec3

I will conclude with this quote"

“In creating Barbie, my philosophy was that, through the doll, girls could become anything they wanted to be. Barbie has always represented a woman who chooses for herself”.

— Ruth Handler

I dyed part of my hair neon pink and went as Barbie's grandma. I am still sorting out all my feelings about the movie.
