I have seen the difference up close in my travels to the southern parts of Mexico. Wasn't ever sure of the whys, but it is noticeable. Also in the states, in certain places, as Bob mentions. Thanks for the article Mike!
Geography plays a big role in the economic viability of a region. Mexico is at a definite economic disadvantage geographically - deserts, mountains, tropical jungle, and no navigable rivers. Southern Mexico takes that geographic disadvantage and adds in the complexity of multiple languages, no major cities, mostly small towns under 25K people. There are similarities with the U.S. South for sure, especially a largely rural population and small farms. I think I want to write an article about some of the geographic features of Mexico that has kept it from becoming a more wealthy country - but I feel like I've been writing a lot about problems in Mexico! In the coming weeks I'll focus on some more upbeat stuff :-) Thanks for the comment, Victor!
Thank you, I learned a lot that I didn't know about the southern states. I agree with Bob Randall, the divide has been in operation in every place I have lived, and it makes a difference in the lives of many.
Yes - I was thinking about just that as I was writing this. Some similarities here with the fates of the U.S. and Mexican south. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks Mike, I am again grateful for your thoughtful perspectives on the history and current state of Mexico. 💜
Thanks for the comment, Doug - I appreciate it!

Agreed - these sorts of divides seem to be the rule rather than the exception, unfortunately. Thanks for the comment!
Very interesting Mike, you should write an article about "American Listo" and the US divide. :-)

I guess in this case, two is not necessarily better than one! I have just enough humor to entertain myself…
Not at all - your humor entertains me as well! Thanks for commenting!
