More good info I didn't know. Thanks, Mike. I've heard of PROFECO but didn't know too much about it. I remember about 2 years ago reading how somebody advertised big screen TVs for a certain price and by mistake left off a zero or two. They were forced to sell them at the low low price until they could turn it around. There was a photo of shoppers in line going oh yeah....

Yeah, PROFECO also looks out for businesses bringing people in with advertised promotions, and then not honoring that promotion - so I can see how mistakes like that would be costly!

Which reminds me. I heard that PROFECO was involved in stopping the Sam's Club practice of checking your items / receipt as you go out the door. Costco does the same thing, but recently placed a notice at the entrance that says by shopping here you agree to this practice. Seems like the two things are connected, but also seems weird that you can get around it by just putting a sign up.

Interesting. I wonder what the issue is with checking receipts - seems benign enough, if a bit annoying. Surely Mexico isn't outlawing things that are annoying :-)

Yeah, I don't know. Allow me to sing: "I heard it through the grapevine", not always reliable. :) And yes, let's not outlaw things just because they might be annoying. One of the reasons I love Mexico is that everything is more flexy.

I can see using PROFECO to find the cheapest deal in town on a planned purchase. What a great service! Or even just figure out who HAS something specific I want to buy, like beach chairs, etc. In the US I’ll often have to go to multiple stores to price shop, and I have found prices to vary by as much as 50%! Wish we had this!

Especially for larger purchases, that price comparison thing adds a lot of value

but ... but ... I want Batman to come help me! Again, thank you for this new-to-me information. I almost want the next restaurant I visit across the Rio Grande to over charge me... No, not really. What do you have to say about the custom of haggling over prices at open markets, tianguis and other places? I am not hard-wired to do it and I wonder of I offend vendors.

I don't think it is offensive to haggle over un-posted prices. I have noted that in more touristy areas, vendors at these kinds of establishments don't tend to haggle as much as they used to. Probably a result of most tourists not haggling, thus the vendors know they can get their price from the next person who comes along.
